CONSULTANCY TITLE: GREEN ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT AND ACCESS TO FINANCE CONSULTANT

1. Background

The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) is an international development organization that works with communities and partners to strengthen livelihoods and promote inclusive, sustainable development in rural communities.
Green RISE Africa – GROW Pillar seeks to strengthen competitive green enterprises, improve access to markets and finance, and create dignified work for young people, especially women. IIRR Kenya’s approved proposal targets 1,500 nano- and micro-enterprises in regenerative agriculture and the circular economy in Kiambu, Nakuru and Nyeri Counties. It prioritizes entrepreneurs aged 18–35, women-owned/led businesses and underserved groups, with portfolio targets of at least 70% women, 7% forcibly displaced persons and 3% persons with disabilities. With recruitment and training planned to start in November 2026, IIRR seeks a consultant to develop practical training materials, train staff and strengthen staff capacity in finance readiness.

2. Objective of the Assignment

The objective is to equip IIRR staff and County-Based Green Enterprise Advisors with practical, ready-to-use training materials and skills to train participating entrepreneurs in regenerative agriculture and circular economy, while building staff knowledge to support enterprise financial readiness and access-to-finance facilitation.

3. Scope of Work

The consultant will work closely with the Project Manager and relevant IIRR technical staff and will:
• Review the approved technical proposal and existing programme materials, then agree a concise workplan and training outline with IIRR.
• Develop a practical, user-friendly curriculum/training module covering regenerative agriculture and circular economy enterprise opportunities, relevant green practices, resource efficiency, waste reduction and recovery, viable business models, value addition, and enterprise sustainability.
• Prepare facilitator notes, session plans, practical demonstrations and exercises, local case examples, checklists and simple assessment tools. Participant training must be practical and tailored to completed business diagnostics, addressing each enterprise’s identified needs, constraints and growth opportunities.
• Deliver a practical Training of Trainers (ToT) for IIRR staff and County-Based Green Enterprise Advisors. Then co-facilitate the first few entrepreneur cohorts, demonstrate hands-on delivery, observe staff facilitation and provide coaching and feedback so staff can independently train subsequent cohorts.
• Build staff capacity to support finance readiness, including assessing enterprise financing needs, basic recordkeeping and cash-flow information, understanding finance-provider requirements and product terms, preparing application documentation and making appropriate referrals
• Advise and guide staff on where and how participants can access quick, affordable loans; facilitate linkages to suitable lenders and provide simple checklists/tools.
